For universities that have strong programs focused on design planning, I urge you to see the Institute of Design-IIT. A strategic planning system is nothing more than a structured (that is, designed) process that organizes and coordinates the activities of the managers who do the planning. As shown in the accompanying diagram, the next task is the selection and design of the transformation process that can deliver those factors—low cost, high quality, innovative outputs, customization, fast reponse, and so on—in an efficient and effective manner.
I know what you might be thinking: The extreme ends of the spectrum are dangerous: Everyone needs to wake up. The integration of user-centered thinking and product development requires structure. For some, you may be able to partner with a developer and draw your wireframes on a napkin over a beer, and for others offshore teams may need overly complex UDIDs and red lines to appropriately deliver your product.
Flexibility allows teams to collaboratively define the approach for each project. The best laid plan is specific to the product at hand, the money and time available, and the resources working on the project.
You must be firm in your rationale for required deliverables and your approach to each project. Timelines and process In order to successfully install a UX practice, or even elements of a UX practice, you need to be able to discuss timelines.
As a UX practice matures, global project plans will evolve organically to include UX. Barrier Almost no time will be allotted towards UX deliverables. As incremental UX deliverables are integrated into projects, keep track of time to know how long it took to work through.
Use this as a base—and double it—as when project plans start be more inclusive of UX. Deliverable creation duration will start to expand from hours or days to allow more time to work through ideas.
